What we cover

We report Australia and the world on the beats that decide how people actually live: parliament and the public service, the courts, business and the companies behind it, work, and the money moving between them. Investigations run alongside the daily file rather than instead of it. One thing we are not is News Evaluation, our sister masthead, which reads other outlets and takes apart how they covered a story. That title examines the press. This one does its own reporting and shows the working underneath it. If you want the coverage judged, that is next door. If you want the story with its evidence attached, you are in the right place. The Verified Journalism Press has not started publishing, so what you can read here is the plan and the standard we hold ourselves to, not an archive. How we work

Every factual claim carries its source, and the source is linked wherever a link exists. Where the evidence is a document, we publish the document beside the story instead of describing it: filings, transcripts, registers, correspondence, tender papers, whatever the reporting rests on. Where a claim could not be stood up, the story says so in the sentence itself rather than quietly dropping the claim, because an omission tells the reader nothing and a marked gap tells them a great deal. Anonymous sourcing is allowed only when the story explains why it was necessary and someone other than the reporter knows who the source is. If a subject declines to comment, we print the questions we asked. Nothing is published because it sounds right.

Corrections

Corrections are a section of this masthead, not a line at the foot of a page. Each one names the sentence that was wrong, prints the sentence that replaced it, dates the change and says which check failed to catch it. A corrected story carries a visible notice at the top and keeps that notice permanently. We do not silently rewrite published work: typographical fixes are logged, and anything that shifts meaning is a correction with its own entry. Readers can ask for one by writing to the corrections desk and quoting the sentence at issue, and we answer whether or not we agree.
