Chandni Bar sequel holds its December 2026 date while the fight over the title stays unresolved
Legend Studios still intends to release a reimagined sequel on 3 December 2026, a quarter century after Madhur Bhandarkar's original. Bhandarkar has complained to the producers' association, which has reportedly told the makers to stop using the name.

Legend Studios still intends to release a Chandni Bar sequel on 3 December 2026. Madhur Bhandarkar, who directed the original, still says the producers have no right to the name. Ten months after the dispute became public, neither position has moved.
The original film is worth stating accurately, because the sequel's claim to it is the whole argument. Chandni Bar was released on 28 September 2001, directed by Bhandarkar and produced by Lata Mohan. Tabu played Mumtaz Sawant, with Atul Kulkarni, Ananya Khare, Rajpal Yadav and Upendra Limaye. It won four prizes at the 49th National Film Awards: Best Film on Other Social Issues, Best Actress for Tabu, Best Supporting Actor for Kulkarni and Best Supporting Actress for Khare. It took about Rs 66 million against a budget of Rs 15 million.
The sequel was announced by the producer Sandeep Singh through his Legend Studios, with Ajay Bahl, director of BA Pass and Section 375, attached to direct. The Hans India and Bollywood Bubble reported the announcement, timed to the original film's anniversary, with a release set for 3 December 2026 to mark 25 years. Reports place filming in Mumbai and Dubai, beginning in mid 2026.
Bhandarkar's objection went to the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association. Bollywood Hungama and WION reported that he complained that the title Chandni Bar belongs to him and that Singh and Bahl had proceeded without authorisation, and that IMPPA instructed the makers to stop using the title until the matter is settled.
Legend Studios disputes the premise. Its response, reported by Bollywood Hungama and carried by Indian news agencies, is that it acquired the rights from the original production, represented by Lata Mohan Iyer, the widow of the late producer R. Mohan, and that she is the registered proprietor of the title in the Government of India's Trademark Registry. The company says it holds a certificate from that registry.
This is a point on which earlier reporting, including a version of this story published in October 2025, had the facts the wrong way round. It described the rights holders as "R. Mohan and the late Lata Mohan Iyer". The reporting is the reverse: R. Mohan has died, and Lata Mohan Iyer is the living proprietor. The 2001 film credits Lata Mohan as its producer.
The dispute is not really about a word. Indian film title registration runs through producers' associations such as IMPPA, and separately through the trademark registry, and the two systems can produce different answers to the same question. A director who made a film does not automatically hold rights in its title; a producer who registered it may. Bhandarkar's complaint tests whether association practice or trademark law governs, and neither body has issued a public ruling.
Casting is unsettled. Outlook India reported that Tabu and Katrina Kaif are being discussed for the leads, with no official announcement from the producers. Names circulated in October 2025, including Triptii Dimri, Ananya Panday and Sharvari, cannot be traced to any confirmed source and should be disregarded.
What the sequel would be is also undecided in public. Legend Studios has described it as a reimagined sequel set in an international environment, which is a considerable distance from a film about Mumbai bar dancers made for Rs 15 million. The 2001 film's authority came from its specificity. A version relocated to Dubai with a marquee cast is a different proposition, and the producers have not explained how the two connect.
The immediate question is whether the film can be shot at all under a contested title. A 3 December 2026 release requires principal photography to be well advanced by now, and as of publication no start of filming has been announced. If IMPPA's direction stands, the producers face a choice between changing the name and waiting. Either would be reported. Neither has been.
