Spain's longest totality on 12 August was about 1 minute 50 seconds, not the 2 minutes 18 quoted
NASA puts greatest eclipse at 17:45:53.8 UT with 2 minutes 18.2 seconds of totality and a path 294.0 kilometres wide, at a point in the Atlantic west of Iceland. On land the numbers were smaller: about 2 minutes 13 seconds in the Westfjords, about 1 minute 48 at Oviedo, and about 29 seconds in Bilbao.

The total solar eclipse of 12 August 2026 was the first seen from the Iberian Peninsula since 15 April 1912. Spain's Instituto Geografico Nacional records that the last total eclipse visible anywhere in Spain was in 1959, and only from the Canary Islands. The number attached to the 2026 event almost everywhere, 2 minutes 18 seconds, was never available from any inhabited part of Spain.
The figure is correct, but it belongs to a patch of the North Atlantic. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center path data give greatest eclipse at 17:45:53.8 Universal Time at 65 degrees 13.5 minutes north, 25 degrees 13.7 minutes west, with a central duration of 2 minutes 18.2 seconds and a path 294.0 kilometres wide. EclipseWise, the eclipse calculator maintained by Fred Espenak, gives 17:45:53.3 UT1, a magnitude of 1.03863, a gamma of 0.89774, and places the eclipse as number 48 of 72 in Saros series 126. The point of greatest duration was slightly earlier and further north, at 17:44:41.5 UT1, 65 degrees 49.8 minutes north, 25 degrees 29.1 minutes west. Both points sit offshore, west of Iceland. Times quoted as 17:47 come from Terrestrial Dynamical Time rather than Universal Time, and the 72.4 second delta T between the two accounts for most of the discrepancy readers will find between sources.
Iceland itself did not get the maximum. NationalEclipse reports the centreline missed the land entirely, so only the eastern half of the path crossed the island: about 2 minutes 13 seconds at the western tip of the Westfjords, about 1 minute 30 seconds at Isafjordur, about 2 minutes 3 seconds at Olafsvik on Snaefellsnes and about 2 minutes 10 seconds at the peninsula's western tip, about 1 minute 39 seconds at Keflavik, and only around 59 seconds in the Reykjavik area.
Spain got less again. Euronews reported before the event that the shadow entered through north western Galicia at about 19:27 local time and left through the Balearic Islands by about 20:35, crossing a band 293 kilometres wide across up to twelve autonomous communities. The Instituto Geografico Nacional states that the path "will cross Spain from west to east and pass through numerous provincial capitals, from A Coruna to Palma de Mallorca, including Leon, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia".
Being inside the path is not the same as getting a long eclipse. NationalEclipse gives Oviedo about 1 minute 48 seconds, which it describes as just a couple of seconds short of the maximum duration in Spain, putting the Spanish best at roughly 1 minute 50 seconds. Gijon gets about 1 minute 45 seconds, Castellon about 1 minute 34 seconds, Valencia about a minute in the city centre, Tarragona about a minute, and Bilbao only about 29 seconds. Madrid was outside totality altogether, the path tracking just north of the city, and Euronews reported that at least 92 per cent of the Sun would be covered across the whole peninsula.
The other constraint was geometry. Eclipsophile, the eclipse climatology site, warned that the Sun stood at about 10 degrees of elevation on the north coast and a mere 4 degrees above the horizon at the Balearic Sea during totality, so that "the view to the Sun must be clear at the horizon whatever may be present in the rest of the sky". Its climate analysis favoured the Ebro valley around Zaragoza and Huesca, where satellite records suggested a site at Zaragoza would have had an easy view in 18 of 21 sampled years, and it put mean August cloud on the Arctic Russian coast at around 75 per cent and Iceland at 70 to 80 per cent.
The scientific programme was built around the same shortage of seconds. NASA planned to fly its WB-57 high altitude jet at 50,000 feet carrying the SCIFLI Multispectral Airborne Imager, four cameras recording the corona in visible and infrared light at at least 20 images a second. Flying along the path at 460 miles per hour was to extend observation to nearly three minutes against the maximum 2 minutes 18 seconds visible from the ground. The instrument's principal investigator is Amir Caspi of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado. Student teams were to launch 86 balloons in total, 80 from Iceland to study how the shadow disturbs the atmospheric boundary layer and 6 from Spain carrying 360 degree cameras and ozone measuring instruments. Kelly Korreck, NASA's eclipse programme manager, said the Sun "impacts our daily life, satellites, and astronauts in space, and we can take advantage of this moment to advance our understanding of that influence". Nature published a news piece by Ignacio Amigo on 11 August on the coronal magnetic field measurements the eclipse would allow.
Spain is now at the start of a run. The Instituto Geografico Nacional lists a second total eclipse on 2 August 2027, with the maximum duration of totality, 4 minutes 48 seconds, observed at Ceuta, and an annular eclipse on 26 January 2028 whose path crosses the peninsula from south west to north east including Seville, Malaga, Murcia and Valencia. The Spanish Rural Development Network estimates the three events together could generate close to 1.4 billion euros, concentrated in rural regions that see few foreign visitors.
What has not been published is how many people actually travelled. Castile and Leon alone projected two million visitors for the first eclipse, and no verified attendance count has appeared. Nor is it yet clear how much of the science programme survived the cloud.
For the record, and against the assumption that 2026 was a once in a lifetime event: for Spain it was the first of three in less than eighteen months.
