The AI memory squeeze reached official price statistics in July 2026, but not the headline inflation rate

US prices for computer software and accessories rose 21.2 per cent in the year to July 2026, and computers and peripherals rose 3.5 per cent in that month alone. Information technology commodities as a whole were still 4.8 per cent cheaper than a year earlier.

The memory shortage caused by artificial intelligence infrastructure buying has been visible in component quotes since late 2025. As of the July 2026 consumer price data, published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics on 12 August 2026, it is visible in official statistics too, though not where most summaries claim.

The detailed expenditure table shows the index for computer software and accessories up 21.2 per cent in the 12 months to July 2026. The index for computers, peripherals and smart home assistants was up 3.9 per cent over the year and up 3.5 per cent in July alone on a seasonally adjusted basis, an unusual monthly move in a category that historically falls. Both numbers sit inside a broader index that is still going the other way: information technology commodities as a group were 4.8 per cent cheaper than a year earlier, dragged down by telephone hardware, calculators and other consumer information items at minus 11.8 per cent.

None of this shows up in the headline. The all items index rose 3.4 per cent over the year to July 2026 and the index excluding food and energy rose 2.5 per cent. Commodities less food and energy commodities rose 0.8 per cent. The relative importance figures explain why. Computers, peripherals and smart home assistants carry a weight of 0.298 per cent of the consumer basket and computer software and accessories 0.031 per cent. A doubling in either moves the aggregate very little on its own.

That matters for the most quoted estimate in circulation. J.P. Morgan Research, in a piece published on 6 August 2026, estimates that DRAM prices will have risen more than 400 per cent from the start of 2024 to the end of 2026, records a 23 per cent rise in the consumer price index for software and accessories and a 37 per cent rise in the import price index for computers, peripherals and parts since the end of 2024, and states that every 10 per cent increase in hardware costs is estimated to raise core consumer price and personal consumption expenditures inflation by around 0.1 per cent, with a 0.2 to 0.4 per cent lift attributed to the memory shock. The bank's 23 per cent figure and the Bureau's 21.2 per cent are measured over different windows and are consistent in direction. The inflation estimate is the bank's own modelling, not an official statistic, and it necessarily runs through channels wider than the two small consumer categories above, since those categories alone cannot carry that much.

The import side supports the direction. In the release published on 17 July 2026, covering June 2026 data, the Bureau reported that import capital goods prices rose 0.4 per cent in the month, with higher prices for computers, peripherals and semiconductors driving the advance, and that nonfuel import prices rose 4.2 per cent over the 12 months to June, the largest such increase since the year ended June 2022.

Behind the indices is a supply reallocation the industry has documented in public. TrendForce forecast on 5 January 2026 that conventional DRAM contract prices would rise 55 to 60 per cent quarter on quarter in the first quarter of 2026, server DRAM by more than 60 per cent, and NAND flash by 33 to 38 per cent, as suppliers shifted advanced nodes toward server and high bandwidth memory products. On 2 February 2026 it raised those numbers sharply, to 90 to 95 per cent for conventional DRAM, 55 to 60 per cent for NAND flash and 53 to 58 per cent for enterprise solid state drives, and said PC DRAM prices would at least double in the quarter. The Register, reporting the revision the same day, noted that original equipment manufacturers such as Dell and HP buy memory in bulk about a year ahead of demand, which had held pre built system prices steady while standalone memory kits tripled, and that prices were expected to remain high through 2028.

IDC had modelled the consumer end earlier, on 18 December 2025, putting DRAM supply growth at 16 per cent and NAND at 17 per cent year on year, both below historical norms, and setting out scenarios in which PC average selling prices rise 4 to 6 per cent in a moderate case and 6 to 8 per cent in a pessimistic one, with shipments falling between 4.9 and 8.9 per cent. Its phrasing of the mechanism was direct: every wafer allocated to a high bandwidth memory stack for an Nvidia graphics processor is a wafer denied to a mobile memory module.

Several things remain unresolved. It is not public how the Bureau's quality adjustment procedures treat devices whose memory content is cut to hold a price point, which would understate the shock. The 0.2 to 0.4 per cent estimate has not been replicated by an official forecaster in anything retrieved here. And the aggregate information technology commodities index is still negative, so on the broadest published measure the AI build out has not yet made computing more expensive for American consumers.
